Mosselplaat to De Paardekreek

Sunday, 24th June, 2019

We had rather a disturbed night’s sleep on Mosselplaat, due to the wind changing direction and getting up in the night, which caused continuous “slap” from the water on the stern. Unusually it affected Chris more than Carole as he is generally a deeper sleeper. We were also wakened by the sounds of men and machinery cutting the grass and exchanging the bins and chemical toilet. By the time we were ready to leave, their work was done and they had moved off to continue their good work somewhere else.

After breakfast, we slipped our lines and set off on the look out for another suitable spot to stay in the Veerse Meer. With the help of the charts, we checked out a number of likely places, but couldn’t find a vacant space with sufficient depth, so we headed on towards Kortgene and with just a few minutes to go, we spotted a likely jetty and motored slowly to it to “sniff out” its suitability. We were pleased to find it was just deep enough to accommodate us, so we came nicely alongside and tied up for the night.  The water here was quite busy with craft of all shapes and sizes and before long there was a race for the free spot next to us between a large motorboat and an older, less manoeuvrable sailing boat. The motorboat won easily, leaving the other boat a space on the inside, which wasn’t ideal for him. However, after three attempts and a bit of help from us, he managed to get tied up safely. He did mutter a few words about the skipper of the motorboat, who had guiltily dashed over to offer his help, but these things seem to be part of everyday life here – some days you win, some you lose.

We had a sandwich lunch and then Carole donned her swimming costume ready for a dip.  We also wondered whether we could move the boat round the other side of the jetty, so Carole took a pole to the other side and checked out the depth. There was definitely not enough water, so we stayed where we were.

The water temperature had increased again by a degree, so Carole coaxed Chris to put his swimming shorts on and he walked on the beach and began paddling, eventually going in up to his shorts, but wasn’t brave enough to get his shoulders under.

We had another quiet evening with cards following supper and an earlyish night.
