Goes to St Annaland

Sunday 30th June

We had a better night’s sleep and didn’t wake until about 08.30. We had said we would leave on the 10.00 bridge lift, so we made ourselves ready and slipped our lines at 09:55. Soon the bridge bells sounded and we were joined by 4 other boats. It only took a few minutes to get through and we followed two of the boats in front of us through the next small bridge then joined about eight others for the lockout. We took the south route going around Galgeplaat then north towards the Oosterschelde. The sails were out with a good 15 knots of wind and we were making 7.5 knots through the water. It did not take long to get to the Krabbenkreek where St Annaland is located.

We put the sails away and Carole organised the fenders and lines. We tied up on the reporting pontoon but had to wait to call the Harbour Master as he was on his lunch until 13.30. We had some fruit and cake to keep us going and once the Harbour Master returned from lunch, we were allocated berth E1 which was at the very far end right by the walk way. As we went down the pontoons we noticed that someone else were on that berth trying to tie up. The issue was that they were allocated E2 but the wind blew them onto our allocated berth. Chris pulled away to give them time to sort themselves out. 10 minutes later we made our attempt. We made it look very slick sliding in between them and the pontoon and our Dutch neighbour repaid our patience by helping us with our lines. The only problem was the shape of the pontoon at our stern had part of the corner jutting out so we could not get right back to get on and off at the stern. We paid our dues and made a booking in the onsite restaurant www.Buutengaets.nl which specialise in local fish. Now we had time to chill out until dinner time. About 18.00, we went and showered and make ourselves presentable for eating out. We had a small table where we could look out on to the water while we ate. Overall, we enjoyed our meal (apart from a few little things – like scales not removed from fish and extra vegetables not offered until meal almost finished) but we felt it was over-priced and Chris did not leave a tip as service was only adequate.

We returned to the boat for a coffee and a quiet evening on our iPads before turning in for a much cooler night.

We had a much better, cooler night’s sleep and were wakened by the noise of someone dumping lots of glass into the recycling bin.  Carole got up first and after a nice cuppa and biscuit, got on with the task of emptying the fridge and cleaning and drying it out.  The fridge has been working very hard over the last week and had accumulated half a bowl of water in the bottom.  Once done, we had breakfast and tidied away before going up for our showers.  The day was dry and sunny, but with a cool breeze keeping the temperature down at around 20 degrees, a good 10 degrees lower than it had been.

We took a stroll along the water front and then down to the local Jumbo supermarket, where we enjoyed walking round looking at the different types and styles of products on sale here.  We bought some eggs, the shells of which were pure white, unlike ours at home which are normally speckled brown.  When we returned to the boat, our Dutch neighbour was just preparing his lines to leave, so we helped him make a successful and smooth exit from an awkward berth.  Carole put the shopping away, while Chris cooked us a lunch of bacon and eggs, after which he proceeded to wash up while Carole continued catching up with our blog.  We had been rather lazy writing our blog each day, so today we were resolved to getting caught up before we started to forget everything.

We took a walk up to the beach and Chris took a seat in the sunshine while Carole joined the half a dozen or so others enjoying a swim.  It was no surprise that the water temperature was quite cool here, probably under 20 degrees, especially as the water is tidal and it was high water.  Carole visited the facilities to warm up under a hot shower.  Supper was cheese and biscuits with a nice glass of rose wine.  Once cleared away, we tossed a coin to decide cards or scrabble and Chris proceeded to beat Carole soundly.  We headed to our beds having decided that we would move on to Brunisse tomorrow.
