And we’re off!

Ramsgate

We slipped our lines from Ipswich at 11 a.m. and following an uneventful lock-out we headed out of the Orwell under a grey sky. We put the sails up at Pin Mill and headed out of Felixstowe dodging the busy container ships on our way. We set course for Cork Sands, then took the outer route via Knock John towards Ramsgate.

We had a surprisingly good sail up to North Foreland when the wind increased and the sea had developed to a 2 metre swell. Not very comfortable for skipper and certainly not for crew! We were delighted to motor into Ramsgate and as soon as we went past the breakwater, everything calmed down and we were able to moor without incident on a hammerhead pontoon next to a work boat which was getting ready to head back out to work on the wind farm we had just sailed past. An hour after its departure, it was no surprise to see it return – too rough for it to work tonight.

Our previous overnight stops at Ramsgate have been unsettled and this proved to be no different with wind, rain and continuous boat movements making for a broken night’s sleep.
